The most
dangerous place in the world to live according to Jewish Morals is the State of
Israel.
Oh, you can do
the ceremonial stuff that comes instead of living morally very easily. If you
are one of those dissociated Jews who think that Judaism is about ceremonies,
you can delude yourself into thinking you're living a Jewish life in the State
of Israel.
You can give all
the charity you want in the State of Israel. The State couldn't care less if
you impoverish yourself. But God help you if you act to eliminate poverty and
misery.
Just try to live
according to the Moral Principles of the Torah in the State of Israel.
A moral Jew
brings the Inquisition on himself or herself in the State of Israel. I mean
that literally, not figuratively.
Every aspect of
our lives in the State of Israel seems planned and designed to undermine our
moral structure: the perpetual wars we are forced to participate in from the
age of 18, being under threat of legal reprisals unless we turn a blind eye to
Child Trafficking, being under threat of legal reprisals unless we turn a blind
eye to financial corruption, the difficulty of making a decent living here
without cheating, being encouraged to ignore the suffering and mistreatment of
others...all of it seems designed to destroy the Jewish People morally.
The State of
Israel seems like the last, and most heartbreaking, test of our moral mettle.
The miracle is: Some of us are passing that test.
